The order depends on who is looking

Instagram builds the list of another account for each viewer. Two people who open the same Following list at the same time can see different names at the top. Accounts the viewer also follows, and accounts the viewer interacts with, are moved up.

Instagram has not published the exact rules, and they have changed several times. What is certain is the effect: the position of a name in someone else's list tells you about your own connection to that name, not about when it was followed.

Your own list is different

On your own profile you can sort your Following list by the date you followed each account, newest or oldest first. This is why the topic is confusing: the feature exists, but only for the owner of the account.

What this means in practice

If you try to work out recent follows by looking at the list in the app, you will usually get it wrong. Typical traps:

• A mutual friend appears first and looks like a new follow, although the follow is years old.
• A brand-new follow is buried far down because you have no connection to that account.
• The order changes between two visits, which looks like activity but is only a new arrangement.

How the real order can still be read

The order of time has not disappeared, it is just not what the app shows you on other profiles. FollowScope reads the public following list in the order in which the follows happened and shows the five most recent entries, newest first.

This works for the Following list of public accounts. For the Followers list, Instagram changed its answers in 2026 so that a reliable newest-first order is currently not available. We show that openly instead of presenting a list in the wrong order.

Short version

The top of someone else's Following list is personalised for you. It is not a timeline. If you need to know who was followed last, you need a view that is sorted by time, not by relevance.
